World of The 5th Sun (2012) ~ Chris Billington

This video took a little longer than expected to produce as I had a few glitches with the sound, mainly due to wind noise on the commentary which was recorded outside. I have eliminated as much interference as possible.

Anyway, here is the exhibition video…..

The Engine Room @ Nottingham’s Night of Festivals

The Engine Room

The Engine Room ~ Chris Billington (2012)

The Engine Room ~ Chris Billington (2012)

Commissioned especially for screening at Nottingham’s exciting 3 day “Night Of Festivals” event which takes place on Thursday 22nd June – Saturday 24th June inclusive. My video “The Engine Room” will be debuted in the Artreach Nanoplex ~ the world’s smallest moving image gallery ~ where it will be showing on a continuous basis alongside a range of short moving image works from film makers from six continents over the three days of the Night Of Festivals.

Intrigued by the prospect of showing some of my work in the world’s smallest moving image gallery I set about thinking in terms of early large scale technology as a counterpart to, and in keeping with the theme of the exhibition celebrating world freedom.

With “The Engine Room” I have tried to capture the essence of an important piece of Britain’s industrial legacy. This is a snapshot of marine engineering circa 1843 that made the SS Great Britain the fastest ship in the world, with her 12 knot engine being Isambard Kingdom Brunel’s magnificent wonder of the age.

In her day The SS Great Britain was the embodiment of freedom, enabling passengers to cross the oceans swiftly and safely, giving many who sailed in her a new found independence, her engine room was the power behind that freedom.

Created specifically for ArtReach it is my intention that my video and accompanying soundtrack will enable the viewer to experience the power of The Engine Room through the unique and intimate environment of nanoplex.

For those who cannot get to “Night of Festivals” the video will be uploaded to my YouTube account after the 3 day event has finished.

7 Deadly Sins Exhibition @ Marina di Pisa. Italy

I am very proud to say that my first work to be shown in Italy goes on exhibition today in the 7 Deadly Sins Exhibition at Villa Bondi in Marina di Pisa, Tuscany.

Earlier this year I was invited by Nadia Spita to produce something for the 7 deadly Sins Exhibition, a 10 day show which takes place in Pisa from the 1st – 10th June, organised by Art Caffè London in association with EMERGENCY UK, a British, independent charitable organisation that support’s EMERGENCY’s healthcare projects in conflict and post conflict areas. The aim of the exhibition is to address an important issue in contemporary society: waste, recycling and abuse of unnecessary materials that are creating problems for us and our future.

I came up with an idea which was a play on the words of the exhibition title itself while working with 7 drink tins to alert viewers to the fact that these drinks, and others like them, are mostly loaded with fructose, sugars, phosphoric acid, low ph values, caffeine, often containing aspartame and devoid of any nutritional value. The title of my piece, which is mixed & recycled media on a 24” x 20” ply panel is “7 Deadly Tins”.

Created in part with recycled soft drink tins set against a vivid backdrop to emphasise their attractiveness but beneath the bright colours is a message that however seductive and enticing they appear, soft fizzy drinks are anything but a healthy option for us or our planet.

Monies raised from the exhibition will go towards funding a Paediatric Centre in Bangui in Central African Republic, work on which was started by EMERGENCY in 2008.

Diamond Jubilee Ball Charity Auction for Cornwall Blind Association

I was delighted to be asked if I could provide a painting for Cornwall Blind Association’s Diamond Jubilee Charity Ball auction which is to be held at The Penventon Park Hotel in Redruth on June 22nd.

Last year I helped the CBA to raise a sizeable amount and this year I hope that we can do the same. I have donated “Quay Cottages, St.Ives”, a 2008 painting which has been on my lounge wall for the past few years as a personal favourite.

Pictured below are Bernard Lee, Alison Lee and Debbie Henshaw from Cornwall Blind Association taking delivery of “Quay Cottages, St.Ives” at their Truro Office.
