Juelich Museum Director Celebrates Forthcoming Exhibition

Two days ago Juelich Museum Director Marcell Perse took a Billington from their collection up into the Ahr Valley to celebrate my forthcoming exhibition which opens with them next week.

It is the wine season in the Ahr Valley and Marcell took my painting ‘Burg Are Altenahr’ into the landscape from which it was derived to toast the show from what he said is the best viewpoint of the scene painted by Schirmer and myself.

As final preparations are completed by the Museum this warm gesture is an expression of the significance of my ‘Landscapes To Schirmer’ and I am completely amazed by their enthusiasm.

Landscapes to Schirmer ~ The Exhibition

Following several years of collaboration with the Juelich Museum, the final preparations for my  Schirmer exhibition are now being completed with last minute amendments to the catalogue, which goes to print today, and even some slight revisions to the title of the exhibition itself.

Here is some background information on the realisation of this historically significant exhibition.

When the original project was put to me by the Museum Director they were already in possession of four of my paintings which they had acquired when my first ‘Dialogue with Schirmer’ paintings were shown at the Internationale Kunstakademie in Heimbach by the invitation of Professor Dr Frank Zehnder in 2010. My work having been introduced to Professor Zehnder by Maf Radersheidt, with whom I worked on several projects in Germany, including a solo exhibition in her fine gallery in Bad Münstereifel.

The Juelich went on to acquire a further painting of mine, when in 2011 Marcell Perse of the Museum requested that I paint my interpretation of their new Schirmer, ‘Italian Landscape With Bridge’ which they had just purchased from auction at Lempertz. My painting was officially presented at the Museum on International Museum Day, May 15th 2011, alongside the Schirmer original.

It was at this time, in 2011 Marcell Perse proposed that I continue my ‘Dialogue with Schirmer’ by marking the 150th anniversary, in September 2013, of his death with an exhibition of fifteen of my works, one to mark each decade of the 150 years and in recognition of my visionary abstracted work on one of the greatest German Landscape painters and founders of the Dusseldorf school of painting.

After much considered thought the working title for the exhibition was decided on between myself and the Museum, “Colour and Reduction – 15 landscapes to J. W. Schirmer”, but it has become evident to us that the project has expanded and now encompasses all of my paintings, my fifteen new ‘Schirmer’ paintings along with the five that the Museum already hold. As of three days ago the exhibition is now also titled ‘Landscapes to Schirmer’. The styles of Billington and Schirmer are a complete contrast, separated by centuries of Landscape tradition, but by creating a new colour vocabulary and through new forms I have assembled new landscape environments in my interpretation of these great works.

With this work I have attempted to reach Schirmer’s level of consciousness and I propose a new definition of landscape painting arrived at by searching for the hidden instead of accepting what is apparent.   My “Landscapes to Schirmer” sums up the coexistence of two painters across centuries….

‘Landscapes to Schirmer’ is the culmination of many months of work and planning between myself and the Juelich Museum, and my paintings are derived from access to many of the originals at the Museum Citadel, and several large volumes of Schirmer’s complete oeuvre which were given to me by Marcell Perse.

I have been given unconditional artistic freedom to determine and complete the project with complete autonomy and every step along the way they Museum have been sincerely enthusiastic and supportive right down to telling me that the exhibition invitation cards are one of the best products that they have produced in years. To be held in the Citadel Chapel, the exhibition opens on Saturday 19th October and there will be Curator Tours on Sunday 20th October and Sunday 3rd November at 11.00hrs.

My absolute gratitude goes to Marcell Perse and his marvelous staff at The Juelich Museum for having such great faith and confidence in my work and for having the extraordinary insight to see this historic project through from the seed of an idea to its magnificent conclusion.

Exhibition opening: Saturday 19 October 16.00 hrs
Curator Tours: Sunday 20 October and 3 Each November 11.00 hrs

Images of the paintings will be added to my exhibition page in a few days.

Today I received the first draft of the catalogue for my October exhibition of  “Colour and Reduction – 15 Landscapes to J.W. Schirmer”  from the Juelich Museum.

I am stunned by the care and dedication that the museum have put into creating this, it is a work of art and already runs to 40+ pages, and it is most gratifying to see my works sitting alongside the Schirmer originals on the page.   It is now in the final stages and will be available in good time for the opening.

I have now started work on the piece that has been commissioned by Velux and The Daylight Project and I will update the News on this exciting and most interesting project once it is properly in process.

The Daylight Project

A retrospective exhibition of my work which takes place in the magnificent Regency Room of The Hotel Victoria in Newquay from 25 October to 6 November, which I am holding in aid of Marie Curie, will feature several paintings which have not been shown in Cornwall before, along with ‘Gweek Bridge’ which has been specifically painted for Marie Curie and is to be raffled at the Marie Curie Holly Ball in December. Tickets for the raffle will be available soon and ‘Gweek Bridge’ will be photographed later this week with representatives from Marie Curie.

Dream-A-Way Charity Auction

Exeter based Charity Dream-A-Way provide holidays and outings for seriously ill and disabled people of all ages living in Devon, Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly. What marks them out as being quite unique is that nobody, from the Chairman down, takes any remuneration from the Charity. Every penny raised goes towards helping people.

Next month Dream-A-Way celebrates its 20th Birthday with a Charity Ball and Auction on Friday 4th October at Sandy Park, home of the Exeter Chiefs. I am most pleased to have donated a painting for the auction, ‘Mary Anne’, from my 2010 Falmouth exhibition of ‘Falmouth Working Boats’.

Latest paintings sold

I am delighted to report that it has been a busy month for sales with two more paintings sold this last week. These latest sales are to a Director of a German Bank and a Retired British Defense Attaché which further demonstrates the breadth and diversity of my collector base, all of whom I am ever grateful to for their love and support of my work.

Both of the paintings are from 2010, ‘Cosmic Lights, Mousehole’ which was originally exhibited at The Stoneman Gallery in Penzance many of you will remember was my 2010 Christmas Card and it has now gone to it’s new home.

The other one interestingly I only mentioned a week ago as it is one of the last of my original Falmouth Working Boat paintings, ‘Cousin Jinny’, from my exhibition at The Steele Gallery in Falmouth which was held during the 2010 Henri Lloyd Falmouth Week, and I was watching her in action again during this years event.

Falmouth Working Boats Revisited

Sparked by the recent Falmouth Working Boat “World” Championships, a five race series which took place at the end of June, and featuring many of my favourite Working Boats which I had previously painted for my Falmouth Exhibition for the 2010 Henri Lloyd Falmouth Week I decided to revisit the subject this year.

The first painting in my new series, which I recently completed, is titled ‘Rita Wins Again’ and was painted in recognition of her winning the World Championships. Others will follow intermittently as I shall be fitting them in, between other projects, as time allows.

Below are a couple of my paintings from 2010, ‘Cousin Jinny’ and ‘Cousin Jack’, and it was good to see these two fine boats battling it out again.

On Sunday I spent a few hours watching the racing and taking shots of these magnificent and colourful boats from the headland as they sailed in the bay of The Helford.

As is customary the opening day’s racing of the 2013 Henri Lloyd Falmouth Week was hosted by the Helford River Sailing Club and I saw many fine boats in action. Today I hope to get a few more photos of the boats from the Champagne Day racing, which is hosted by the Falmouth Town Sailing Club.
